THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A HEAT ADVISORY WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 8 PM EDT THURSDAY FOR OUR AREA.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES… BETWEEN 98 AND 102 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON AND THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

* TEMPERATURES… IN THE MID TO UPPER 90S THIS AFTERNOON AND THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS… THE WORST WOULD BE FELT BY THOSE WHO LIVE AND/OR WORK IN THE MORE URBAN AREAS AND AWAY FROM THE IMMEDIATE COAST. THOSE WHO ARE AT A GREATER RISK INCLUDE THE ELDERLY… THE INFIRM AND CHILDREN.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS… STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM… STAY OUT OF THE SUN… AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN!  YOU SHOULD APPLY A BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN WITH AN SPF OF 15 OR HIGHER DAILY, AND INCREASE THE SPF LEVEL FOR THIS TYPE OF WEATHER.  SINCE NO SUNSCREEN IS “WATERPROOF”” REMEMBER TO REAPPLY AFTER SWIMMING OR WATER SPORTS.
