A study in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), reports “breast reduction surgery produces measurable improvements in several important areas of health and quality of life. The study was designed to evaluate and confirm the benefits of breast reduction surgery-one of the most commonly performed breast plastic surgery procedures. Previous studies have found it highly effective in relieving symptoms related to overly large breasts.”
Women with large breasts, the condition known as macromastia, often suffer from neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain, all of which negatively impact their lives on a daily basis. Exercise becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, choices of clothing are limited and self-image is adversely affected.
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is usually performed as same day surgery (no overnight hospital stay) and post-operative recovery is minimal. While strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for about four weeks after surgery, most women can return to driving in one week.
