National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day was first held in Canada last year. This year, in a combined effort between the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Plastic Surgery Foundation, the United States will join twenty other countries to promote awareness of breast reconstruction options available to women after a mastectomy. This year the first Bra Day USA will occur on October 17, and each year after, on the third Wednesday of October.
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and New York Times bestselling poet, Jewel will serve as the national spokesperson for the first US BRA Day, and will perform in New Orleans during Plastic Surgery – The Meeting, on October 29. Proceeds from this concert will be donated to The Plastic Surgery Foundation and breast reconstruction organizations. Jewel will be making appearances in support of National BRA Day in the months ahead, and has written a song to recognize breast reconstruction patients.
