“Bargain” vacation/cosmetic surgical packages can be very costly, warns Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Brian S. Glatt, MD, FACS of Morristown, NJ.
Booking an all inclusive vacation/cosmetic surgical packages that costs less than the procedure itself in the United States may be tempting, but there are many factors to consider other than cost. It is difficult to research and verify the training and qualifications of a surgeon outside of the US, and almost impossible to confirm accreditation of the facility and ancillary staff (anesthesiologist, nurses, etc.). Many other countries have no accreditation programs in place to ensure the safety of the facility. Cosmetic surgery packages may be marketed as vacations, with access to many amenities, such as swimming pools, gyms and sightseeing tours. In reality, exercise immediately after surgery should be avoided, and air travel or prolonged car or train travel after any surgery increases the risk of blood clots and pulmonary embolism which can be fatal. After your return home, follow-up is impossible and you rarely have access to your medical records should a complication or the need for revisionary surgery arise. Dr. Glatt has seen patients who have had surgery outside the country who develop complications such as infections and hematomas, and unapproved implanted products and unsafe injected material.
Although there are many excellent and competent surgeons practicing all over the world, you take unnecessary risks when choosing cosmetic surgery vacations. Cosmetic surgery is not and should not be a vacation. All plastic surgery requires dedicated recovery time and, as with any surgical procedure, carries real risks.
